The Fila Brasileiro or Brazilian Mastiff is a large dog with origins in Brazil. They are a Molosser breed of a dog that is believed to have Bloodhound, English Mastiff and Bulldog ancestry. They were created to work on ranches in Brazil and were used as guard dogs, as herding dogs, and for tracking down prey, where they would hold the prey (instead of attacking it) until its owner arrived. The name, "Filar", means "hold, arrest, grab" in Portuguese. Fila Brasileiro dogs are bred to be protective and extensive socialization is required if kept as a family pet.
