The Irish Terrier is breed of dog from Ireland. It is considered one of the oldest terrier breeds and may have descended from the Black and Tan Terrier, which is now extinct. They worked as sentinels and messenger dogs in World War I and were known for their loyalty and bravery. There’s a great quote by a British War Dog School commandant about Irish Terriers, where he wrote, “Many a soldier is alive today through the effort of one of these Terriers . . . They are extraordinarily intelligent, faithful, and honest, and a man who has one of them as a companion will never lack a true friend.” The Irish Terrier is an intelligent and devoted dog that loves people, including strangers and children. They can however have difficulties with other dogs, so early socialization is recommended.
