The Newfoundland is a strong working dog breed that originated in Newfoundland, Canada. Originally bred for use by fisherman to haul nets and supplies, they are adept at working on both land in in water. Despite their giant size and strength, Newfoundland dogs are very impressive swimmers. They are known for their calm and sweet nature and are often referred to as a "gentle giants". They are extremely loyal and great with children. Newfoundland dogs make great therapy dogs and are often called "nanny dogs".
