The Norwegian Elkhound is the national dog of Norway. It is a Spitz-type breed of dog that has historically been bred to hunt moose and other large game and to herd and protect flocks. Norwegian Elkhound remains have been found among Viking burial sites and they are considered one of the oldest dog breeds. They are loyal, affectionate and smart.
