The Papillon, otherwise known as the Continental Toy Spaniel, is a breed of dog whose history can be traced to paintings in the 1500s. They are descendants of toy spaniels. The Papillon gets its name from the French word for butterfly, which is a reference to the unique look of its long and fringed ears that resemble the shape of a butterfly. The Papillon is intelligent and are easy to train. They are cheerful and friendly, although they are not necessarily the cuddling type of dog. They get along well with pets and other children, although care must be taken with small dogs around kids.
