Despite their name, their history dates back to even before the Inca where pre-Inca cultures and civilizations kept them as pets. They were nearly wiped out during the Spanish conquest of Peru, but small numbers were able to survive in rural parts of Peru. They gained a mystical value due to their rarity and the belief that they can help treat arthritis. Peruvian Hairless Dogs are loving, affectionate, and protective with family members. They crave companionship, either with people or other dogs, and generally do not like being alone.
