The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a breed of dog that originated in South Africa. They were bred by farmers in South Africa to serve as hunters, companions and protectors all while being able withstand the harsh conditions, including lack of water, of the region they inhabited. They were developed by crossing native South African dogs with breeds like the Great Dane, Bloodhound and Mastiff. They were previously known as the African Lion Hound thanks to their ability to corner a lion and hold it at bay while waiting for the hunter to arrive. As pets, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a smart but independent dog that require early training and socialization. They are affectionate and protective of owners and typically are not recommended for inexperienced dog owners.
