The Rottweiler is a medium to large sized dog breed and one of the oldest herding dog breeds on record. They have a history that may date back to the Roman Empire. In Germany, they were called "Rottweil Butcher Dogs" as they were used to guide cattle and other livestock to the market and to pull carts for butchers. They have historically been used as police and military dogs. The Rottweiler is a powerful dog but is good natured and obedient. They are loving with their owners and people they know but can also be protective and suspicious of strangers. Socialization and obedience training is a must.
